Mini Strawberry Trifles {Amy Atlas Book Giveaway} [UPDATED]

A few weeks ago, I found these sweet mini trifle bowls at Pier 1 Imports (you can also get them on amazon). Resistance was futile, so I grabbed four of them, without any real plan as to what I would do with them yet (aside from making some sort of trifle…obvs).

Then, I got to take a peek inside of the new book Sweet Designs: Bake It, Craft It, Style It by Amy Atlas. Holy-oh-my-wow. I mean, it’s Amy Atlas, so you know you can expect great things from this book, but it is just wonderful! So wonderful, in fact, that I get to give one away to one of you!

Amy’s book isn’t just about styling, or cooking, or partying…it covers the whole enchilada. She has great tips for how to style an entire perfect dessert table, or just one of the desserts from her book. And talk about desserts galore! There’s so much to choose from!

You can plan an entire amazing party using Amy’s ideas, or whip up the perfect end to a yummy meal. The “Perfectly Preppy” is a particular favorite theme of mine.

Of course, the “Pastel Pretty” is, too. And there’s a honey bee theme that is so wonderful.

I was especially drawn to the “Picnic in the Park,” though. We have had so many warm, sunny days in Oregon recently, and I’ve been hoping to break out my brand new picnic blanket, that I bought almost a year ago and have yet to use. Hm. Let’s see…mini trifle bowls and a new picnic blanket? I’m pretty sure those two things wanna hang out together.

In Amy’s “Picnic” chapter, she has a beautiful Strawberry Trifle that I couldn’t resist. Strawberries covered in sugar and bathed in booze (or you can skip the booze and sub in OJ), fresh whipped cream, and pound cake? Yes, please.

Plus, just look at these big, beautiful organic strawberries that I was able to get ahold of. Obviously, these trifles wanted to be made.

Since you have all of those lovely strawberries, and they need to be hulled, take it from me, you need a fast, easy way to hull lots of strawberries in a little time. Enter the plain, old drinking straw. Make sure it’s a little on the wide side so that you get the whole stem of the strawberry. Just place the straw against the bottom of the strawberry, lining it up as best as possible with the stem on the other side. Then, push the straw gently through the strawberry to the base of the stem. Push the straw the rest of the way through the berry until the stem pops out.

When all is said and done, you’ll have perfectly cored berries, and it only takes a few minutes to get all of them done.

Next, slice the berries thin.

Toss the sliced strawberries with sugar, Grand Marnier (or orange juice), and lemon juice. Cover and chill for at least 3 hours.

About 30 minutes before removing the strawberry mixture from the refrigerator, cut your pound cake into squares and make some fresh whipped cream. For a full sized trifle, you’ll want to cut the cake into one-inch cubes, but for the minis, try to cut the cubes slightly smaller, so they’ll fit into the smaller bowls better.

Layer the bottom of each trifle bowl with a few tablespoons of whipped cream, top with a generous, but level, layer of pound cake pieces, and spoon the strawberry mixture and juice over the cake. Next add a few more tablespoons of whipped cream to the top, smoothing it slightly, and garnish with a pretty, whole strawberry.

Since the mini trifle bowls are so small, it’s difficult to add several layers to them, like you would in a full sized trifle bowl. You could cut your strawberries and pound cake pieces much smaller, but they don’t have as appealing of a texture that way, so I recommend making them as I have. They’re still beautiful and summery, and they taste absolutely wonderful.

You may not be able to get as many layers into these individual trifles, but you can really pile to goodies in there, so don’t hold back! This recipe is so incredibly fast and ultra easy, there’s no excuse for not making them today. And tomorrow. And probably the day after that, too. Enjoy!

Mini Strawberry Trifles
Makes 4 mini trifles

**To make a full 16-cup trifle, double all of the ingredients, but triple the pound cake (1 1/2 loaves).**

1 1/2 pints strawberries, hulled and sliced
2 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons Grand Marnier (or orange juice)
1 tablespoon lemon juice

1/2 loaf packaged pound cake

1 recipe Whipped Cream

In a medium bowl, toss the strawberries, sugar, Grand Marnier, and lemon juice together until combined. Cover the bowl and chill for at least 3 hours.

Thirty minutes before removing the strawberry mixture from the refrigerator, cut the pound cake into bite-sized squares. For a full sized trifle, cut the cake into one-inch cubes, but for the minis, try to cut the cubes slightly smaller, so they’ll fit into the smaller bowls better.

Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Grab all of the best treats to eat during each season. That would be my dream party 🙂

A party that I have had “galloping” through my head, would be for my two year old daughter who loves horses (like her mama). I would like to give her a “Pocketful of Ponies” birthday party. I imagine a ranch setting with lots of blue jeans (pockets), hay bales, and sunflowers. The strawberry trifles would be a great dessert for this theme.

  31. says

I would LOVE to throw my mom a secret retirement party–I know it sounds kind of lame, but my mother has worked so hard her entire life and has had a lot of tough breaks. She has survived (only at the age of 57) her mother, father, and only sibling. My father and I are all she has left. She is the one person I can always count on and she is the most self-less person I know. She deserves the biggest, most amazing party, and I am beginning to get some ideas, even though it is two years away. 🙂

  32. says

Ever since I was little I have been enthralled with Alice and Wonderland. I would love to throw an Alice in Wonderland themed party for adults (for no reason in particular!) • Amy W says

Forgot to put what type of theme I would do, so excited about the book. 🙂 I loved the beehive theme party, too cute for words, but I would probably do some kind of candy theme part just because I love candy.

  36. says

My dream party theme would either be a vintage themed party for a bridal shower or a pantone color of the year themed summer party. I would have Tangerine Tango Everywhere! It’s such a fun color.

  37. says

My dream party theme would be to host a 50th anniversary party for my parents (just over 10 years away!) that featured revamped Brooklyn and Coney Island favorite foods. We’d have a full display of photographed back drops of Coney Island games and rides. Also, some black and white street shots of Brooklyn from the 70’s, glittered with white lights. I want it to be glamorous, yet invoke memories of them dating in the early 70’s!

I’d love to win this! I’m only 15, but a HUGE baker at heart. I think it runs in the family.
ANYWAYS! My “dream theme,” being somewhat of a nerd and all, would probably have to do with computer programming. I’ve wanted to try making a display of cupcakes or something with Python or C++ programming code.

I actually used my daughters first birthday to execute a dream party theme of mine. Pink Lemonade, everything strawberry and lemons, soft pinks and yellows and it was sweet without being too themey. I’m hoping when shes a little older she’ll let me do a tea party theme a la Enid Blyton and the Faraway Tree series.

  49. Katy Kelley says

My dream party theme… hmmm- I know! One of my friends from high school (we’re no longer in high school, or even college for that matter) is pregnant with twin boys. She is having a baby shower and I have thought the theme – Boy, oh Boy would be so cute. I have had a million ideas already. And, no, I’m not planning her shower. 🙂 I’ll just put it on pinterest for the next time one of my friends is pregnant with twin boys.

  50. Audra Bell says

I would love to have a Party theme all about style icons through out time celebrating your favorite fashion inspiration from Eve in the bible to Lady Gaga. I’d be a combination of Betty boop, Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. The colors would be light pink with dak pink accents and all the food would be jewelry themed.

  51. Jackie says

I don’t know if it counts as my “dream party,” but my geeky side is taking over and I suddenly can’t get the image of a Final Fantasy themed party out of my head. Chocobos and moogles and characters with too many buckles on their clothes, airships and giant swords… It would be fun.

  52. Meghan says

My dream party theme? A question with so many possible answers! Right now, I’d have to say I’d love to have a party that celebrated a “return to child”. I know that sounds simple, but I think so many of us have lost touch with our inner child that we deserve a party to bring out and celebrate that inner child! Things like cupcakes, Twister, Spice Girls (I’m a 90’s baby!), and other fun memories and ideas that my guests cherish about their childhoods.

  53. Dani says

HARRY POTTER!!! Every year I tell my friends and family that’s the party I want and every year they go with the same old “It’s spring! Let’s do blue and green and leave it at that!” NO NO NO! I want Bertie Botts and a Chocolate Frog Cake (would love to see THAT on here!!) and music from the movies blasting through the house. Is that too much to ask? No? I didn’t think so.

  54. Terry Metayer says

My dream party would be a jewel of India decorated/themed party on the beach (on a beautiful warm evening as the sun is setting and a gorgeous moon is rising) with all of our family and all the great friends who have been there to support us through our journeys. The food would be a mix of delicious Indian, Mexican & Italian since those are my favorite types of food….besides dessert that is! The sun is shining brightly as I type this and I can almost feel the warm breeze and smell the ocean air! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to step out of my world for a few minutes!

I’ll be graduating with my Master’s in about two weeks, and we’re looking to create a similar theme. 🙂

My ideal party theme, hmm, that’s a tough one. When my family & friends have parties, we often play video or board games, so I guess a gaming-themed dessert table & party for all of us would be pretty awesome! Scrabble-inspired cookies, perhaps? A Wii-shaped cake? Oh, now I’m getting ideas!

  100. says

  105. Jessica says

My dream party theme? That’s easy. Doctor Who- all the way. Complete with your fish fingers and custard, and some kind of bow tie pasta. Although I do have this reoccurring dream about a Psych party- jerk chicken, blueberries and of course, pineapple everything.

  109. Mary B. says

Hard to choose…since I have a 4 y.o. boy and 2.5 y.o. girl, it would be something that both of them would like…maybe Mickey Mouse or Little Einsteins! 🙂

for my 40th birthday, I threw myself a dessert party and the theme was “Sweet 40”, with a table full of sweets, including a chocolate fountain, mini cheesecakes, cupcakes and a tres leches cake made by a sweet friend of mine, among other sweets, most home-made by me.

my dream party theme would be like a fairytale in white and soft pink, lots of dreamy peony flowers and roses, little round lightbulbs like fire flies, long tables and lots of happy people enjoying each others company. This all happens in a beautiful peaceful garden, on a warm night and the sky, filled with twinkling stars. Well, I live in the Netherlands, so I don’t think this will ever happen, but I keep dreaming of a wedding party like this for one or all three of my daughters.

  123. Anna Durbin says

My dream party (which my boyfriend & I actually plan on doing this year or next) is a 1960’s themed Christmas party! I would love to have everyone dressed in 1960’s fashion. The house would be decorated with retro ornaments and even a white Christmas tree. The food would be vintage recipes… down to the classic jello-mold. That would be soooo much fun!

  124. Caroline says

    What’s your dream party theme?
It would have to be a “Just because” Harry Potter/ Doctor Who party! My two favorite things with limitless party possibilities!

    Also I tweeted! (@Caroline_Bohan)

  125. Reine Birdsell says

I would either like an outdoor shabby chic party, a very classy with a touch of 50’s party at the Casino on Catalina Island, or just a good old fashioned beach party! Thank you!

  126. Ashley says

You know, asking about my dream party theme is like asking me what famous person I want to have dinner with. Impossible. But at the moment I think something sparkly, white and wintery sounds awesome. Even though it’s only just now getting warm. Call me crazy.

  127. Marcie says

Hm… I think the theme of food is a great one, but I guess if I HAD to choose a theme theme, I’d go with something nerdy like a Mario theme. It could be fun to dress in overalls and wear fake mustaches, right?

  128. says

My absolute DREAM party theme is a super fancy-shmancy masquerade–I’m talking full-on elaborate masks, gowns, & tuxes, the whole shebang! It’s on my list of things to do if I ever become rich enough! XD My more realistic dream party theme is a 1920s speakeasy! 🙂

  129. says

For my son’s 2nd birthday we did a Wheel of Fortune themed party since he loved to watch that show. We dressed him like a little talk show host.

For his 3rd party we threw a Dr. Seuss themed party… another favorite of his. Loved that too.

Now with a new little girl on the way this book would be a big help for party ideas for her.

  130. says

I’d do this one for just about anyone, but it was done for me for my bridal shower: Alice’s Tea Party! Miniature foods everywhere, lots of different teas, and even a rousing game of hedgehog croquet complete with inflatable flamingos! Best party ever!
