Mini Strawberry Trifles {Amy Atlas Book Giveaway} [UPDATED]

by Darla

A few weeks ago, I found these sweet mini trifle bowls at Pier 1 Imports (you can also get them on amazon). Resistance was futile, so I grabbed four of them, without any real plan as to what I would do with them yet (aside from making some sort of trifle…obvs).

Then, I got to take a peek inside of the new book Sweet Designs: Bake It, Craft It, Style It by Amy Atlas. Holy-oh-my-wow. I mean, it’s Amy Atlas, so you know you can expect great things from this book, but it is just wonderful! So wonderful, in fact, that I get to give one away to one of you!

Amy’s book isn’t just about styling, or cooking, or partying…it covers the whole enchilada. She has great tips for how to style an entire perfect dessert table, or just one of the desserts from her book. And talk about desserts galore! There’s so much to choose from!

You can plan an entire amazing party using Amy’s ideas, or whip up the perfect end to a yummy meal. The “Perfectly Preppy” is a particular favorite theme of mine.

Of course, the “Pastel Pretty” is, too. And there’s a honey bee theme that is so wonderful.

I was especially drawn to the “Picnic in the Park,” though. We have had so many warm, sunny days in Oregon recently, and I’ve been hoping to break out my brand new picnic blanket, that I bought almost a year ago and have yet to use. Hm. Let’s see…mini trifle bowls and a new picnic blanket? I’m pretty sure those two things wanna hang out together.

In Amy’s “Picnic” chapter, she has a beautiful Strawberry Trifle that I couldn’t resist. Strawberries covered in sugar and bathed in booze (or you can skip the booze and sub in OJ), fresh whipped cream, and pound cake? Yes, please.

Plus, just look at these big, beautiful organic strawberries that I was able to get ahold of. Obviously, these trifles wanted to be made.

Since you have all of those lovely strawberries, and they need to be hulled, take it from me, you need a fast, easy way to hull lots of strawberries in a little time. Enter the plain, old drinking straw. Make sure it’s a little on the wide side so that you get the whole stem of the strawberry. Just place the straw against the bottom of the strawberry, lining it up as best as possible with the stem on the other side. Then, push the straw gently through the strawberry to the base of the stem. Push the straw the rest of the way through the berry until the stem pops out.

When all is said and done, you’ll have perfectly cored berries, and it only takes a few minutes to get all of them done.

Next, slice the berries thin.

Toss the sliced strawberries with sugar, Grand Marnier (or orange juice), and lemon juice. Cover and chill for at least 3 hours.

About 30 minutes before removing the strawberry mixture from the refrigerator, cut your pound cake into squares and make some fresh whipped cream. For a full sized trifle, you’ll want to cut the cake into one-inch cubes, but for the minis, try to cut the cubes slightly smaller, so they’ll fit into the smaller bowls better.

Layer the bottom of each trifle bowl with a few tablespoons of whipped cream, top with a generous, but level, layer of pound cake pieces, and spoon the strawberry mixture and juice over the cake. Next add a few more tablespoons of whipped cream to the top, smoothing it slightly, and garnish with a pretty, whole strawberry.

Since the mini trifle bowls are so small, it’s difficult to add several layers to them, like you would in a full sized trifle bowl. You could cut your strawberries and pound cake pieces much smaller, but they don’t have as appealing of a texture that way, so I recommend making them as I have. They’re still beautiful and summery, and they taste absolutely wonderful.

You may not be able to get as many layers into these individual trifles, but you can really pile to goodies in there, so don’t hold back! This recipe is so incredibly fast and ultra easy, there’s no excuse for not making them today. And tomorrow. And probably the day after that, too. Enjoy!

Mini Strawberry Trifles
Makes 4 mini trifles

**To make a full 16-cup trifle, double all of the ingredients, but triple the pound cake (1 1/2 loaves).**

Ingredients

1 1/2 pints strawberries, hulled and sliced
2 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons Grand Marnier (or orange juice)
1 tablespoon lemon juice

1/2 loaf packaged pound cake

1 recipe Whipped Cream

In a medium bowl, toss the strawberries, sugar, Grand Marnier, and lemon juice together until combined. Cover the bowl and chill for at least 3 hours.

Thirty minutes before removing the strawberry mixture from the refrigerator, cut the pound cake into bite-sized squares. For a full sized trifle, cut the cake into one-inch cubes, but for the minis, try to cut the cubes slightly smaller, so they’ll fit into the smaller bowls better.

Refrigerate until ready to serve.

As for my dream party? Gosh I have no idea. There are just too many things that I like. Maybe a Harry Potter party. I bet the wizarding world would have amazing treats (hello chocolate frogs and pumpkin pasties!) or maybe a seasons/holiday party. Yes That would be awesome! I would LOVE to throw my mom a secret retirement party–I know it sounds kind of lame, but my mother has worked so hard her entire life and has had a lot of tough breaks. She has survived (only at the age of 57) her mother, father, and only sibling. My father and I are all she has left. She is the one person I can always count on and she is the most self-less person I know. She deserves the biggest, most amazing party, and I am beginning to get some ideas, even though it is two years away. :)

What a cute blog page you have! This is my first visit – thanks to Callye – I’ll be back for sure. Those strawberries you found are amazing and the trifles are beautiful. I can hardly wait for the local berries to start coming on. Hmmm dream party? A wine and cheese tasting party, laid back & casual, preferably outdoors on a balmy, summer evening.

We’d have a full display of photographed back drops of Coney Island games and rides. Also, some black and white street shots of Brooklyn from the 70′s, glittered with white lights. She is having a baby shower and I have thought the theme – Boy, oh Boy would be so cute. I have had a million ideas already. My dream party theme? A question with so many possible answers! Right now, I’d have to say I’d love to have a party that celebrated a “return to child”. I know that sounds simple, but I think so many of us have lost touch with our inner child that we deserve a party to bring out and celebrate that inner child! Things like cupcakes, Twister, Spice Girls (I’m a 90′s baby!), and other fun memories and ideas that my guests cherish about their childhoods.

Oh my goodness, I looooove strawberries! Tonight, I had an odd, but satisfyingly delicious combination of cheese ball, strawberry preserves and strawberry. It was delightful!

My ideal party would be a chocolate party! I would have to have a chocolate fountain, make that three–one sporting dark chocolate, another for milk and the third for white. Then there would be brownies, cookies, truffles… I could go until my fingers fell off! Mmm, now I want to go bake.

Best wishes to everyone, and thanks for all the yumminess!!

This book sounds fantastic! I have so many ideas for a dream theme, but the one that takes the cake right now would have to be an outdoor garden-party style event, complete with white paper lanterns hung throughout the area, some chicken and veggie kebabs on the grill, and, of course, a table full of cupcakes right in the middle of it all. I’ll be graduating with my Master’s in about two weeks, and we’re looking to create a similar theme. :)

I would live to see a Victorian French/Parisian theme. It was the theme for my wedding and would love to see it sort of “tamed” down to an every day party!

for my 40th birthday, I threw myself a dessert party and the theme was “Sweet 40″, with a table full of sweets, including a chocolate fountain, mini cheesecakes, cupcakes and a tres leches cake made by a sweet friend of mine, among other sweets, most home-made by me.

my dream party theme would be like a fairytale in white and soft pink, lots of dreamy peony flowers and roses, little round lightbulbs like fire flies, long tables and lots of happy people enjoying each others company. This all happens in a beautiful peaceful garden, on a warm night and the sky, filled with twinkling stars. Well, I live in the Netherlands, so I don’t think this will ever happen, but I keep dreaming of a wedding party like this for one or all three of my daughters.

For my son’s 2nd birthday we did a Wheel of Fortune themed party since he loved to watch that show. We dressed him like a little talk show host.

For his 3rd party we threw a Dr. Seuss themed party… another favorite of his. Loved that too.

Now with a new little girl on the way this book would be a big help for party ideas for her.
