Sweet and Easy Valentines

We don't have big Valentine's Day celebrations in this realm. We do, however, enjoy the excuse to just love Love. I mean, that's what it's really all about, right? For us, V-day is simply a good reason to eat sweets and be cuddlier than usual. Those are things we could all use a little more of! So I have decided to spend the rest of this week on sweet posts for the Sweetest day of the year. Today's sweet takes something delicious and chocolatey and ... read more

Chicken Pot Pie

I love comfort food when it's cold outside. Who doesn't, right? One of my favorites is chicken pot pie. It's a lot easier than people give it think it is, and it's always delicious! I also love that you can modify it to suit your taste. You can add all different kinds of veggies, or you can keep it simple. I like to make individual pies, but this recipe can also make one large 9x13 pie. For the crust of the pot pies, frozen pie dough is a ... read more

Bavarian Winter Cupcakes

To celebrate the Indianapolis Colts' playing in the Super Bowl yesterday, I wanted to make a very white cake that could either be tinted blue beautifully, or combined with blue frosting or filling to make the Colts' team colors of blue and white. I decided on a classic white cake, with a touch of almond and punched it up a little with raspberry filling and white chocolate frosting (which also turned out to be a beautiful, clean white). My husband is the ... read more

Cupcakes: Super Bowl Edition

I don't typically post on the weekends, but it's a special occasion. If you've read my profile, then you know I'm an Indiana girl. This, of course, means that I'm cheering on my hometown team, the Indianapolis Colts, today in the Super Bowl!! To honor that, I'm just posting a tad bit of support here. I hadn't planned on making anything for the Bowl this year, but living so far away from home makes you cherish the moments when it feels close again, so ... read more

S’more Brownies

I love brownies. More than any other dessert, I'm always happy to have a brownie; especially a well made brownie, which is honestly hard to get at most restaurants. I always think restaurant brownies end up tasting more like cake than a brownie. Sure, they taste good, but they don't taste like a brownie. A brownie should be rich, moist, and chocolatey. They should not be light with a loose crumb - that is cake. Brownies are so much more decadent than ... read more

Snickerdoodle Memories

When I was a little girl, and some of you will remember this since we went to school together, the cafeteria at my school used to serve these little chocolate milkshakes for fifty cents. Now, they weren't exactly milkshakes...they were more like a Wendy's Frosty. Served in a little, white styrofoam cup, they were very thick (more like soft serve ice cream then a shake), only sort of chocolatey, and a little bit icy. Not much to write home about, but at ten ... read more

The Best Hot Cocoa. Ever.

My husband has a habit of volunteering to do things for me when I'm not feeling so hot. Wonderful, isn't he? But he always makes the mistake of doing a great job. Well, I know that doesn't sound like a mistake, but it is...for him anyway. You see, once he does a great job, I think, "Wow! This is great! I can have him do this a lot more!" He made this mistake the first time he offered to make me some hot cocoa. I'm a big homemade cocoa girl. One night, ... read more

Tutorial Tuesday: Frangipani Flowers

I am a self taught baker and cake decorator, so I'm a firm believer in hands-on learning. I know that a lot of my friends would like to learn the techniques and tricks behind some of the stuff that I do, but they may not have the time to take a class. Or the money to invest in a lot of tools for stuff they have to try to figure out on their own. That's why I've decided to have Tutorial Tuesdays. In these posts, I'm going to give easy-to-follow instructions ... read more

Hand Tossed Pizza

Saturdays in my realm are Pizza Night. It's the perfect day for it because HRH Beermeister makes them and he doesn't work on weekends (usually). Plus, there's always plenty of leftovers for Sunday lunch the next day! Now this is for real from scratch, start to finish, pizza. HRH has spent several years tweaking it to get it just right, and boy did he get it right!! Each component of the recipe only has a few ingredients and the steps are really simple. ... read more

Baby Shower Confections

A very dear friend of mine, Cristen, is getting ready to have her first baby! She's having a little girl, and I am so thrilled for her and her husband! This past weekend, I co-hosted a shower for her. I made a little cake and some matching cupcakes for the party, and since I shared my marshmallow fondant recipe yesterday, I thought today would be a great chance to share some photos of a cake that has been decorated with rolled fondant. Cristen's ... read more

Marshmallow Fondant

Rolled fondant is a dough-like frosting that you can mold, cut, shape, even emboss, pretty much however you like. Many people prefer a fondant covered cake because it is so smooth and lovely. It's also great because of the very real looking sculptures that can be made with it. However, fondant almost always tastes gross. It usually consists of Crisco and confectioner's sugar with a little water thrown in to soften it up a bit. I'm sure you can imagine how ... read more

Orange Dreamsicle Cupcakes

With all of the recent crazy cold temperatures that most of the country has had, yummy creamsicle popsicles probably aren't a big seller right now. Per the hubster's request, let me present to you this delicious cupcake substitute from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World: 75 Dairy-Free Recipes for Cupcakes that Rule by Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero, which I featured here yesterday. If you don't have the fixins to make this recipe today, you ... read more

Total World Domination…in just 168 pages

I got a new cookbook last week. It has 75 recipes that all, in the end, make the same thing. There are very few foods that could be made 75 different ways and make everybody happy, almost every single time. Cupcakes come in at the top of that list. What's even more impressive about this book is the fact that these recipes are dairy-free...and still delicious. Let's face it, there aren't many dairy free recipes out there that taste just as good as the ... read more

Welcome to my Realm

The title says it all. Welcome to my Bakingdom. In this realm Love strengthens, Family grows, and Friendships are born. Since the beginning of my marriage, the hubster and I have bonded in the kitchen. We learned to cook and bake together over time. Our kitchen has forged the strength of our love and it is still, after 8 years of marriage, the place that we end up together discussing important matters, laughing, playing, cooking, and taste ... read more
